Norway strengthens its position as an international congress destination

Norway has strengthened its position in the international meetings market, ranking 10th in Europe and 14th globally in the latest statistics from the Union of International Associations (UIA).

The 2025 figures place Norway ahead of Sweden, Denmark and Finland. According to Innovation Norway, the results reflect long-term collaboration between professional and academic communities, universities, businesses, destination organisations and the Norwegian meetings industry.

Norway also combines strong professional and academic communities with modern venues and technological infrastructure, while its natural surroundings offer opportunities to extend the experience beyond the congress itself.

For Oslofjord Convention Center, the development comes as the venue strengthens its own focus on the international congress market following its change of ownership in 2024.

Going international: Joyce and her colleagues at Oslofjord discuss how the convention centre in Vestfold can attract more international guests.

Built for complex congresses

Large international congresses require more than a large plenary hall. Thousands of delegates may need to move between plenary sessions, parallel sessions, exhibitions, catering and social activities throughout the day.

“International organisers are looking for solutions that make complex events easier to deliver. It is about capacity, flexible spaces, efficient logistics and the ability to bring the different parts of the programme together,” says Joyce Christine Andersen, who leads Oslofjord Convention Center’s congress initiative.

At Oslofjord, large arenas can be combined with smaller meeting spaces, on-site accommodation, catering and technical production within the same destination.

Creating value beyond the event

International congresses also make a significant contribution to the Norwegian economy. According to Innovation Norway, international delegates and exhibitors generated around NOK 2.3 billion in spending in Norway in 2024, supporting the equivalent of 1,400 full-time jobs.

The impact extends beyond the congress itself. International delegates spent close to NOK 6,000 per day on average, while 42 per cent extended their stay in Norway in connection with the event.

For Oslofjord, the ambition is to contribute to Norway’s ability to compete for more major international congresses.
